Police in Germany are searching for a man described as having a “southern appearance” after a brutal knife attack in Hamburg on Wednesday evening.
The stabbing took place around 8:10 p.m. on Thursday at Hamburg’s Jungfernstieg, a well-known affluent shopping area in the port city.
According to police, an argument broke out between two groups of about eight youths before the situation escalated. The 31-year-old victim was left with severe stab wounds and cuts to his upper body and left arm.
Bild newspaper reported that a brawl preceded the stabbing, during which the attacker suddenly pulled out a knife and inflicted serious injuries before fleeing.
Emergency services responded quickly, and several police patrols secured the scene. The bleeding victim was treated by paramedics and rushed to the hospital. Although he was seriously injured, police later confirmed that his life was not in danger.
Authorities detained several men at the scene on suspicion of grievous bodily harm. However, the primary suspect remains on the run despite an extensive manhunt.
The suspect is believed to be between 33 and 37 years old, approximately 1.75 meters tall, with what police described as a “southern appearance.” The term is commonly used in German media to indicate individuals of African or Middle Eastern descent.
Police have urged witnesses or anyone with information about the incident to come forward immediately.
