Democrat Rep. Debbie Dingell (D-MI) has expressed outrage after President Donald Trump’s “Big, Beautiful Bill” was passed by the House of Representatives on Thursday.
Dingell appeared on CNN to push wild claims about the bill while voicing strong opposition to Trump’s sweeping legislative victory.
The congresswoman claims the newly passed “Big, Beautiful Bill” would devastate vulnerable populations and increase poverty, despite Republican assurances to the contrary.
The bill passed the House of Representatives in a narrow 218-214 vote early Thursday morning after House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-LA) successfully rallied enough Republican support.
Two GOP lawmakers, Reps. Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Brian Fitzpatrick (R-PA), broke ranks and voted with Democrats to oppose the measure.
Appearing during an interview on CNN’s “The Arena with Kasie Hunt,” Dingell claimed that people will “die” because she alleges that the bill will reduce healthcare access and cut critical food assistance.
“What am I worried about?” Dingell said.
“I‘m worried that people are going to lose their healthcare.
“I‘m worried about people who aren‘t going to go to the doctor because they simply can‘t afford it.
“We‘re going to see people back in emergency rooms.”
She specifically pointed to states like Michigan and Pennsylvania, which expanded coverage under the Affordable Care Act with wraparound programs now at risk under the new law.
Dingell also claims that reductions to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) would disproportionately impact vulnerable groups.
“We‘re going to see people die,” Dingell alleged.
“We‘re going to see sicker people.
“I‘m worried about kids and veterans, and seniors being hungry.
“We are cutting SNAP by 20%.
“I‘m worried about rural hospitals closing across this country.
“Some already have,” she added.
The “Big, Beautiful Bill,” a cornerstone of President Trump’s second-term agenda, includes broad tax reforms, enhanced immigration enforcement, energy deregulation, and new work requirements for federal assistance programs.
It is designed to promote economic growth and reduce government dependency.
The White House and GOP leaders have countered criticism by pointing to provisions like the $25 billion safeguard fund for rural hospitals.
The measure is aimed at addressing potential shortfalls caused by Medicaid provider tax reforms.
While Senate Democrats had pushed to raise that fund to $50 billion, the final number represents a significant GOP concession without increasing taxes.
The bill’s changes to SNAP require more able-bodied adults to work or participate in training programs in order to receive food assistance.
Supporters argue the move will encourage personal responsibility and ensure limited federal benefits go to those most in need.
Dingell, however, suggested that the bill’s tax provisions were misleading to many Americans.
“These are going to impact working men’s and women‘s lives across the country,” she alleged.
“And the other thing I want to say is that many of the tax issues that people are talking about, a senior came up to me last week and said ‘You have to vote for this bill. I cannot afford to pay taxes on Social Security.’
“And I said to him ‘That‘s not even in this bill.’
“There‘s a lot of misinformation.”
“The no tax on tips — we want to pass a bill that actually helps the workers,” Dingell added.

Despite Democrat outrage, the tax package provides targeted relief to working and middle-class Americans.
In addition to extending the Trump-era income tax brackets, the legislation eliminates taxes on tipped and overtime wages up to certain caps and includes new deductions for seniors.
Trump is expected to sign the bill into law during a Fourth of July ceremony.
However, the political battle over its provisions is far from over.
Democrats have signaled they will campaign heavily against the law heading into the 2026 midterms, while Trump allies see it as a cornerstone achievement in restoring conservative governance.
