Senate Democrats have once again sided with illegal aliens, including those charged with violent crimes.

On Monday, Democrat senators voted down a Republican effort to protect taxpayer-funded healthcare benefits for law-abiding American citizens.

In a 56–44 vote, Democrats narrowly blocked an amendment offered by Sen. John Cornyn (R-TX) that would have cut federal Medicaid funding to states that provide coverage to illegal immigrants charged or convicted of serious crimes, including murder and sex trafficking.

Despite support from four Democrats, the amendment failed to meet the 60-vote threshold needed to be included in President Donald Trump’s sweeping tax and immigration reform bill.

After the vote, Cornyn wrote on X:

“Democrats chose to side with the worst of the worst in our society over our seniors and most vulnerable American citizens. Disgusting.”

Four Democrats who bucked their party: Sens. Maggie Hassan (NH), Catherine Cortez Masto (NV), Raphael Warnock (GA), and Jon Ossoff (GA).

Those Democrats are all facing pressure from moderate voters in competitive states.

Ossoff, in particular, is seen as one of the most vulnerable Democrats heading into 2026.

Only one Republican, Sen. Susan Collins (R-ME), joined Democrats in opposing the amendment.

The move is consistent with Collins’ record of opposing tougher immigration measures.

Cornyn’s amendment came after Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough ruled that the provision violated reconciliation rules.

The move was dismissed by Cornyn as bureaucratic overreach.

“We’re not going to let an unelected Senate staffer block President Trump’s agenda,” Cornyn said last week.

Trump’s “big, beautiful” bill is being advanced through the budget reconciliation process, allowing Senate Republicans to bypass the Democrat filibuster and pass the president’s domestic priorities with just a simple majority.

The priorities include major tax reform, immigration enforcement, and entitlement spending changes.

The Cornyn amendment would have directly targeted blue states like California, New York, and Illinois, which have used taxpayer dollars to provide Medicaid-like coverage to illegal aliens, including those with criminal records.

Democrats, led by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR), claimed the amendment would punish expansion states by reducing the federal Medicaid match rate.

Merkley bizarrely framed the debate as a question of “states’ rights,” even though Republican states overwhelmingly oppose using tax dollars to fund illegal immigration.

“What happened to states’ rights?” Merkley asked, defending the decision of Democrat-run states to extend free healthcare to those in the country illegally, even those facing criminal charges.

Republicans fired back that the only rights being trampled are those of American citizens who follow the law, pay their taxes, and now watch as criminal aliens are rewarded with public benefits.

Senate Democrats also voted down a separate amendment from Sen. Marsha Blackburn (R-TN) that would have barred illegal immigrants from receiving state-funded Medicaid altogether.

The president insists he will sign the bill into law by July 4th as a symbolic declaration of America reclaiming its sovereignty, border security, and financial future.
