The second round of Poland’s presidential election is right around the corner, and despite a new poll showing the liberal candidate still in the lead, there is also some exciting news for conservatives.
According to respondents to the latest Opinia24 poll for RMF FM, 47.5 percent will vote for Rafał Trzaskowski in the second round and 45.9 percent will vote for Karol Nawrocki. Some 6.6 percent of the survey participants say they do not know who they will vote for.
As RMF FM points out, cited by wPolityce, this is Trzaskowski’s worst result in seven surveys. Meanwhile, Nawrocki saw his best result yet.
This poll is also not an outlier. Most of the polls as of late have both candidates nearly tied or within just two points of one another. Some even have Nawrocki ahead by a slim margin.
The biggest question going into the June 1 election is who Sławomir Mentzen’s voters will get behind after the Confederation candidate came in third in the first round.
As many as 83 percent of those who voted for Mentzen in the first round say they will vote for Nawrocki, backed by the right-wing Law & Justice (PiS), while just 13 percent say they intend to vote for Trzaskowski, backed by liberal PM Tusk’s Civic Coalition (KO).
Nawrocki was seen as losing in most polls just weeks ago. If he can pull off a win, it will not only be a major upset victory in Poland, but it could be a threat to the left-liberal establishment in Brussels as well.
