Mercedes expands plant in Hungary, looks to rely…

The sales revenue of Mercedes-Benz Manufacturing Hungary Kft. decreased by nearly 16 percent, from €5 billion to €4.2 billion while its after-tax profit decreased by 40 percent compared to 2023, €57.6 million instead of €95.6 million.

In its press release, the company said that the results reflect normalizing raw material prices and the continued focus on manufacturing cost efficiency.

Domestic suppliers saw a boost, with the percentage of raw materials, services and non-production investments from Hungarian suppliers increasing to close to 44 percent.

The Mercedes-Benz plant in Kecskemét produced 146,000 vehicles last year; its 2 millionth car in the second half of the year was a purely electric EQB. The expansion of the Hungarian site, the transformation of the plant’s production portfolio, and the flexibility of production provide a solid foundation for profitable growth going forward.

An investment of more than €1 billion “represents a clear commitment to the Kecskemét site,” which with the development will increase the size of the factory to 400 hectares.

Highlights from 2024 include: A new medical clinic and fire department, new production lines, a paint shop modernization, and a new battery assembly plant for the final assembly of high-voltage batteries for purely electric models.

Production of models based on the new MMA platform (Mercedes-Benz Modular Architecture) is planned to start at the beginning of 2026, and production of purely electric models based on the MB.EA platform (Mercedes-Benz Electric Architecture) will begin in the same year. This will create around 3,000 new, valuable jobs in the medium term.

Construction of a solar park will also commence in 2025. The Mercedes-Benz factory in Kecskemét has been carbon-neutral since 2022 and plans to cover more than 70 percent of its production energy needs with renewable energy by 2030. The goal of the group’s global production network is to use exclusively renewable energy by 2039.
