Three people were killed and 14 were injured after a gunman opened fire on a bar in Austin, Texas, as federal investigators probe whether the shooting was a terror attack.
The incident unfolded around 2 a.m. early Sunday morning in Austin’s popular West Sixth Street party district, when police say a man driving a large SUV circled Buford’s Backyard Beer Garden before opening fire on patrons on the patio.
“At one point, he put his flashers on, pulled down his window and began using a pistol shooting out of his car windows, striking patrons of the bar that were on the patio, and out in front of the bar,” Austin Police Chief Lisa Davis said at a press conference.
The man then parked the vehicle and took out a rifle he used to shoot revelers walking along Sixth Street, the police chief described.
Police exchanged fire with the gunman as they arrived at the scene, killing him.
At a press conference, acting Special Agent in Charge for the San Antonio FBI Field Office Alex Doran said the agency was probing “indicators” of terror.
“There were indicators that on the subject and in his vehicle that indicate potential nexus to terrorism,” Doran said. “Again, it’s still too early to make a determination on that.”
In comments to NBC News, “four people briefed on the matter” described the suspect as a “15 year naturalized citizen from Senegal.”
“Investigators are trying to determine whether or not the shooting was the result of an act of terrorism or an individual with mental illness,” the sources told NBC.
Austin gun store owner Michael Cargill noted on X that the suspect allegedly wore a shirt reading “Property of Allah.”

Devastating footage from the incident shows police assisting panicked bar-goers while performing chest compressions on wounded patrons sprawled out on the floor, as other scared customers ducked for cover inside the bar.

And in true dystopian fashion, just when you thought it couldn’t get any worse, a Waymo autonomous vehicle short-circuited while trying to make U-turn, blocking the road for first responders and emergency vehicles.
