Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) suggested that conservative media outlets cover her because of her appearance, mocking women on the Right as having “botox faces” during a friendly exchange with socialist streamer Hasan Piker.
The conversation came amid scrutiny of Omar’s identity, family background, and citizenship history. Rather than attributing the coverage entirely to those controversies, Omar entertained the idea that conservative outlets wanted more attractive people on their screens.
She began by offering that explanation for Piker’s own media coverage.
“I think you just look really good on their screen, that’s why they like having you,” Omar told him.
“Do you think that’s why they get you?” Piker asked.
“Maybe a little bit,” Omar replied, laughing.
Omar Mocks Conservative Women as Piker Invokes “Fascists”
The exchange continued with Piker suggesting that Omar’s “charisma” explained the attention.
“I think that’s what it is,” Omar agreed.
She then turned to the appearance of women on the Right.
“They get tired of looking at their, you know, Botox faces,” Omar said.
She then argued that media outlets only target her because they want to “get some nice, natural-looking faces.”
Piker escalated the insult by referring to conservatives as “fascists.”
“So you’re saying if the fascists were hotter, then they would get more —” he prompted.
“There would be less of us on TV,” Omar responded.
“That’s what I think,” she added.

The exchange reduced sustained scrutiny of a sitting congresswoman to a mutual compliment session, with Omar attacking conservative women’s looks while accepting Piker’s characterization of their political opponents.
Piker Offers Reassurance Amid Investigation
Piker briefly pivoted from appearance to the scrutiny surrounding Omar, framing his question around her strength and resilience.
“How are you holding up with everything going on? You’re good?” Piker asked.
“You’re strong as ever, resilient as ever?”
“Yeah,” Omar responded.
Piker referred to the turmoil as the escalating scandal involving the congresswoman continues to unfold, and Omar described it as familiar.
“It tracks for me,” she said.
“That’s kind of most of my weeks. And months.”
The friendly treatment stood in sharp contrast to the substantive questions driving attention to Omar’s family and immigration history.
Identity and Citizenship Questions Remain Central
The Justice Department has identified Omar as her birth name, Ilhan Nur Said Elmi, adding to the dispute surrounding her identity.
Investigators confirmed that Ilhan Omar is not the congresswoman’s “real name.”
Notably, Omar shares the same birth name as her ex-husband and suspected brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi.
The investigation began during former President Joe Biden’s administration.
Nevertheless, Omar and her allies have deceptively accused President Donald Trump of exploiting it for political advantage.
Scrutiny has included questions about her father’s activities as a decorated military officer under Somalia’s authoritarian Mohamed Siad Barre regime, including whether he participated in war crimes during the civil war.
Investigators believe he used a false identity and falsely portrayed himself as a refugee in order to gain entry into the U.S.
Other questions concern Omar’s age when her father became a naturalized American citizen, an issue relevant to her acquisition of citizenship through him.
A 2023 inquiry seeking information about his naturalization found no corresponding citizenship record in the U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services database, according to reports.
Those are the issues behind the scrutiny.
Omar’s exchange with Piker offered insults about conservative women and flattering explanations for her television coverage rather than answers about the records.
