Democrat Rep. Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick (D-FL) is facing mounting legal and political pressure after federal prosecutors accused her of participating in a multimillion-dollar fraud scheme.
Cherfilus-McCormick is accused of stealing $5 million from taxpayers by fraudulently diverting pandemic relief funds.
Those allegations are now under review in a rare public ethics trial on Capitol Hill.
The House Ethics Committee convened a public proceeding on Thursday to examine the claims.
The move is widely viewed as a sign of the seriousness of the case.
DOJ Alleges $5 Million Scheme
According to the Department of Justice, Cherfilus-McCormick, her brother Edwin Cherfilus, and other co-defendants were charged in connection with a FEMA-funded COVID-19 vaccination staffing contract.
Prosecutors allege the group received an overpayment of $5 million in 2021.
However, rather than return the funds, the defendants moved to conceal and repurpose the money to enrich themselves.
“The defendants conspired to steal that $5 million and routed it through multiple accounts to disguise its source,” the DOJ stated.
Authorities say a portion of the money was used to support Cherfilus-McCormick’s congressional campaign.
The rest of the stolen funds allegedly went toward personal expenses, including luxury purchases such as a diamond ring.
Cherfilus-McCormick has pleaded not guilty and has denied wrongdoing, calling the charges a “distraction.”
Ethics Probe Raises Stakes
The public nature of the House Ethics Committee proceedings is notable, as such hearings are uncommon and typically reserved for serious allegations.
If lawmakers ultimately move to expel Cherfilus-McCormick, it would require a two-thirds vote of the House.
House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has already indicated opposition to expulsion.
GOP Criticism Intensifies
Republicans have seized on the case as part of a broader critique of Democrat leadership.
National Republican Congressional Committee spokesman Mike Marinella said:
“So-called ‘Leader’ Hakeem Jeffries talks a big game on corruption, but when it’s one of his own, he suddenly loses his voice.
“Jeffries and House Democrats have the backbone of a wet paper straw.”
Pattern of Pandemic-Related Fraud Cases
Cherfilus-McCormick’s case is one of several recent incidents involving Democrat officials and alleged misuse of pandemic relief funds.
State Rep. Sharon Henderson (D-GA) was arrested in December over allegations she fraudulently obtained nearly $18,000 in pandemic relief funds and has since been suspended.
Weeks later, State Rep. Karen Bennett (D-GA) resigned before being charged with allegedly stealing approximately $14,000 in relief funds.
She later pleaded guilty to making false statements.
Former State Rep. Dexter Sharper (D-GA) was also charged in connection with unemployment fraud tied to the pandemic and has pleaded guilty.
Potential Expulsion Vote
The Ethics Committee’s findings could shape whether the House takes further action, including a potential expulsion vote.
For now, Cherfilus-McCormick remains in office as both the legal case and congressional review move forward.
The case is placing renewed scrutiny on how pandemic-era funds were distributed and used.
