President Donald Trump is drawing a hard line on the issue of male athletes competing in girls’ sports.
The president is now threatening “large-scale fines” and a loss of federal funding for California over the issue.
“A Biological Male competed in California Girls State Finals, WINNING BIG, despite the fact that they were warned by me not to do so,” Trump said in a post in Truth Social.
“As Governor Gavin Newscum fully understands, large-scale fines will be imposed!!!”
The threat comes after a male athlete took home multiple medals at the 2025 CIF State Girls Track and Field Championships.
As Slay News reported, AB Hernandez, a biological male claiming to be a “transgender female,” earned two state titles and a second-place finish in top-tier girls’ events.
Hernandez’s “victory” is prompting immediate backlash and renewed debate over fairness in women’s sports.
“Allowing biological men to play in women’s sports is “NOT FAIR, AND TOTALLY DEMEANING TO WOMEN AND GIRLS,” Trump posted on Truth Social last week.
Trump further stated that he ordered local authorities to bar Hernandez from competing, warning California Governor Gavin Newsom that federal education funds could be withheld if the state refused to follow through.
Despite the warning, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) allowed Hernandez to compete.
However, the CIF introduced a controversial bylaw as a compromise.
“CIF Bylaw 300.D” asserted that the real female runner-up also received a first-place medal in Hernandez’s events.
Nevertheless, the competition drew protests and media scrutiny.
Supporters praised Hernandez’s resilience, while opponents condemned the outcome as a betrayal of girls’ sports.
“It’s completely unfair to these girls,” said one protester.
“They’ve worked hard, and now they have to compete against a male.
“It’s demoralizing and wrong.”
“He has an advantage by being a male, and it’s really unfortunate that these girls, the psychological effect that it has on them and places on them, when they know they’re not only competing against people of their own sex, but now they gotta go up against a man,” the protester added.
“I think it’s really bad that we’re setting this precedent,” he finished.
Hernandez’s mother, speaking to the Los Angeles Times, expressed pride in her son following his “win” in girls’ sports.
In a major legal escalation, Assistant Attorney General Harmeet Dhillon of the U.S. Department of Justice’s Civil Rights Division issued a statement calling CIF Bylaw 300.D unconstitutional.
The DOJ argues the policy “knowingly deprives female students of athletic opportunities and benefits on the basis of their sex,” thus violating the Equal Protection Clause of the Fourteenth Amendment.
Dhillon set a June 9 deadline for California public school districts to certify in writing that they will not implement Bylaw 300.D, or risk losing federal support.
