Former New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani has led tributes to his “best friend,” former NYC Police Department Commissioner Bernard “Bernie” Kerik, who died on Thursday.
America lost a true patriot this week with the passing of Kerik.
The decorated law enforcement leader whose life was defined by courage, service, and loyalty to his country.
Kerik, who was 69 years old, died after a private illness, according to FBI Director Kash Patel.
His death has left a deep void, particularly for Giuliani.
Giuliani, who served as mayor of New York City from 1994 to 2001, described Kerik as his “best friend” and “one of the bravest men” he ever knew.
“On September 11th, Bernie Kerik and I saved each other’s lives,” Giuliani wrote in a heartfelt tribute.
“If we weren’t already friends, that bound us together forever.”
Their bond was forged during America’s darkest hours — the September 11th attacks.
Both men led New York City with resolve.
According to Giuliani, Kerik was by his side within 20 minutes of the first attack and never left.
Trapped together in a building after one of the towers collapsed, the two managed to escape thanks to “substantial additional assistance” and “extraordinary bravery.”
“Bernie’s leadership helped guide the people of a very frightened city to draw from their inherent individual strength as Americans and children of God,” Giuliani said.
Kerik’s career reflected his love for America and his tireless commitment to public safety.
From reducing violence at Rikers Island by 90% to driving down crime as NYPD Commissioner, Kerik’s legacy in law enforcement was unmatched.
He served for over 35 years and received more than 100 awards for heroic service.
Those awards include honors from President Ronald Reagan and the Department of Homeland Security.
H, he later faced legal challenges, including a 2009 conviction for tax-related offenses.
However, Kerik took responsibility, served his time, and ultimately received a full pardon in 2020 from President Donald Trump.
The move from Trump was widely praised by those who knew Kerik’s lifelong service and sacrifice for the nation.
Following the 2020 election, Kerik stood beside Giuliani once again.
He helped Giuliani investigate allegations of election fraud as part of efforts to restore trust in the electoral process.
The cause was close to the hearts of millions of Americans who want to see fairness restored in Washington.
Giuliani offered his prayers and condolences to Kerik’s wife, his daughters, and his son, who followed in his father’s footsteps by becoming a police officer.
“All of us who knew Bernie are much better for knowing him,” Giuliani said.
“He was a true patriot.”
