Prominent Democrats who campaigned on lowering the cost of gas, groceries, and housing used their first statements after winning the House to put the Trump administration on notice.

The Democrat poised to lead the House Oversight Committee told officials to “lawyer up,” while other lawmakers threatened subpoenas and singled out officials enforcing President Donald Trump’s immigration policies.

Incoming Oversight Chairman Tells Trump Officials to “Lawyer Up”

Rep. Robert Garcia (D-CA), who is poised to chair the House Oversight Committee, issued a two-word warning after Democrats’ Tuesday victory.

“Lawyer Up,” Garcia said in a statement.

Before the election, Garcia told CNN that “Democratic priorities” would include lowering the cost of “gas, groceries, the mortgage, the rent” alongside combating government corruption.

Regarding his post-election message, Garcia argued that “investigating” Trump would advance his affordability agenda.

“People can’t afford gas, groceries, and rent because Donald Trump and his family are ripping off the American people and enriching themselves,” Garcia wrote on X.

“Taking on corruption is about making life more affordable for working families.”

Squad Democrat Puts Immigration Officials on Notice

Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL), a member of the Squad, told a PBS Chicago voter guide before the election that there was “no question that the rising cost of living is the number one issue” for a “working people’s agenda.”

Ramirez had also identified immigration oversight as a priority.

After the election, she used an X post to name five targets for the Democrats’ “get Trump” agenda.

“Noem, Markwayne, Miller, Homan, Bovino, what’s up? Clear your schedule,” Ramirez wrote.

Former Border Patrol Commander Gregory Bovino fired back on X.

“Honey, slow your totalitarian roll,” Bovino wrote.

“Citizens don’t answer to communists in this country as much as you seem to believe that.”

Bovino suggested Ramirez unwind with a bottle of whiskey from a brand he launched after retiring.

Other respondents challenged her over the absence of any mention of household costs.

“Notice nothing about how she is going to help her constituents but ‘get Trump’,” one user wrote.

“So, you guys never really gave a s— about affordability,” former Energy Department staffer Matt van Swol wrote.

Democrats Promise to Hand Out Subpoenas “Like Mardi Gras Beads”

Rep. Analilia Mejia (D-NJ), who represents a longtime Republican-held seat once held by former Rep. Rodney Frelinghuysen, campaigned on affordability and immigration policy.

Her first X post Wednesday put subpoenas front and center.

“We’re going to toss out subpoenas like Mardi Gras beads,” Mejia wrote.

Rep. Tony Wied (R-WI) said Mejia’s post showed that Democrats “have no plans to make life better for you.”

Mejia called him “Mr. Weird” in response and said she wanted an “economy that works for” Americans.

Rep. Yassamin Ansari (D-AZ) announced a “New Affordability Agenda” in April and highlighted her role on the Congressional Progressive Caucus’ “Lowering Costs Task Force.”

On election night, she told Trump what to expect when Democrats take control of the House in January.

“Thank you Mr. President,” Ansari wrote.

“Our thank-you will come in January with subpoenas.”

Ansari followed up by calling for the impeachment of War Secretary Pete Hegseth.

On Wednesday, she posted a separate policy pledge to curb AI.

Sen. Edward Markey (D-MA) listed “groceries, gas prices energy costs” among his midterm priorities.

After the election, he joked that “new forests” would have to be planted for “all of the subpoenas we’ll be printing,” signaling plans to investigate tech executives such as Elon Musk.

“Affordability,” Republican former Virginia Del. Nick Freitas quipped in reply.

Ramirez, Mejia, Ansari, and Markey did not respond to requests for comment.

Trump Administration Pushes Back on Investigation Threats

Department of Homeland Security General Counsel James Percival revealed that the department is prepared to handle the investigations while Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin continues overseeing enforcement.

“It is unfortunate that Democrats are more interested in political shenanigans than in governing,” Percival said.

“Rest assured, however, that we are well prepared to deal with this nonsense so Secretary Mullin can continue focusing on protecting the homeland,” he added.

A Justice Department spokesperson said the department was “not afraid of threats from Democrats” and said its staff had followed the law.

“It is no surprise that rather than focus on bringing down costs for Americans, Democrats in Congress are picking up where their weaponization efforts left off when they were last in power,” the spokesperson said.

The White House said Trump remained willing to work with Democrats on issues that would help “hardworking Americans.”

“If Democrats choose to pursue sham investigations and radical-left policies, they are choosing to work against the American people,” White House spokeswoman Lauren Bis said in a statement.

Immigration Hawks Prepare to Defend Trump Officials

The Mass Deportation Coalition said it was prepared to defend officials targeted by congressional investigations.

The group has criticized the Biden administration’s open-border policies and has argued that Trump’s administration should go further on enforcement in some areas.

“We know what’s coming,” Mass Deportation Coalition leader Mike Howell said.

“A lot of people are going to be cashing out and charging patriots expensive legal fees to the most vulnerable.”

“We have been through this before and are ready to sacrifice for the patriots who are targeted by weaponized harassment,” Howell said.

Andrew Arthur, a former House Oversight Committee counsel and immigration judge now at the Center for Immigration Studies, said Congress has the authority to investigate DHS.

He questioned whether targeting officials such as Border Czar Tom Homan, who served under President Barack Obama and drew “positive” ratings from Republicans and Democrats, would be popular.

“He was commonly viewed as the guy who came in and cleaned things up after Noem left, got things a little bit better,” Arthur said.

“So that’s probably not going to be a terribly popular thing.

“This isn’t really affordability, but anything that shows waste in government technically goes to affordability, and it all depends on how willing the media is to accept that talking point,” he added.

Arthur said DHS can largely continue operating with its existing funding while lawmakers investigate.

He said much of what Mullin and Trump have done falls under laws Congress already passed, including the Immigration and Nationality Act of 1952.

Short of “amending the law itself – which they can’t do if [Trump] vetoes it,” Arthur said, Democrats can investigate shootings involving Immigration and Customs Enforcement and similar incidents to try to cast the agency in a “bad light,” while the law underpinning the broader enforcement effort remains in place.

Federal Reserve Researchers Link Illegal Immigration Surge to Higher Housing Costs

A 2026 white paper by Federal Reserve Bank researchers found that elevated “unauthorized” immigration between 2021 and 2024 contributed to rising housing costs.

The researchers estimated that the influx increased home prices by 6.6% and rents by 4.3% in the average metropolitan area.

The researchers attributed the increases to additional demand for housing that new construction failed to keep up with.
