A British jury found comedian and actor Russell Brand guilty of one count of rape and three counts of sexual assault, with the judge vowing a “significant” prison sentence.

Brand, who denied all seven charges against him, was acquitted of two additional rape counts and one count of attempted indecent assault.

Brand, 51, was taken into custody after the verdicts and is due to be sentenced Monday, according to the BBC.

Judge Bennathan told him to expect a substantial prison sentence.

“You’ve been convicted of a number of offences including rape,” Bennathan said.

“The consequence of that is inevitably a significant custodial term.”

British sentencing guidelines provide for penalties ranging from a community order to up to 10 years in prison for sexual assault.

In determining a sentence, judges consider the offender’s culpability and the harm caused, including whether the victim suffered severe psychological harm.

Brand Admitted Recklessness but Insisted Encounters Were Consensual

The charges involved six women and alleged offenses between 1999 and 2009.

The women testified about encounters at locations including a hotel, a bar, a radio station, a workplace, and Brand’s home.

Brand acknowledged in court that he had been “reckless” and used his fame to pursue sexual relationships, Sky News reported.

He denied forcing any of the women to engage in sexual activity and told jurors that consent was “fundamental, essential and necessary.”

Brand described that period of his life as a “time of promiscuity” and maintained that his encounters were “always consensual.”

He said he had spoken openly about his behavior at the time and continued to do so while defending himself.

Laura Brand Testifies About Their Early Relationship

Brand’s wife, Laura Brand, took the stand as a defense witness last week, one day after her husband testified.

She said she was 19 and he was 31 when they met.

They began dating in 2006 and split the following year, a breakup she attributed to his difficulty with monogamy and her own “inexperience.”

“When I met him, I was aware that he liked women, and I was aware toward the latter half of that year that he was engaging with other women,” Laura Brand told the court, according to Sky News.

“I was not interested in having a relationship with him if he was sleeping with other people.

“I was invested; we both had told each other we loved each other, but it was clear it was difficult for him to be monogamous.”

The couple rekindled their relationship in 2015, married in 2017, and have three children.

Laura described him as “caring and kind, a wonderful father to our children, and an amazing, attentive husband.”

“I feel very seen by him,” she told the court.

Police Opened Investigation After 2023 Media Reports

Police said detectives began investigating after Channel 4 and The Sunday Times published allegations against Brand in September 2023.

Their joint investigation produced a newspaper report and an episode of Channel 4’s “Dispatches” titled “Russell Brand: In Plain Sight.”

The reports included anonymous accounts accusing Brand of physical and emotional abuse, bullying, and sexual assault.

In a video posted to X last year, Brand thanked supporters and criticized the British government and legal system before addressing the charges.

He said he “was a fool before I lived in the light of the Lord.

“I was a drug addict, a sex addict and an imbecile, but what I never was was a rapist.

‘I’ve never engaged in nonconsensual activity.

“I pray that you can see that by looking in my eyes.”

“Of course, I’m now going to have the opportunity to defend these charges in court, and I’m incredibly grateful for that,” Brand added.

He closed the video by telling followers he would continue to address the allegations.
