Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg has been accused of failing New York City Police Department (NYPD) officers as violent assaults on cops have risen dramatically.
Under the failed leadership of far-left prosecutors and weak-on-crime policies, assaults on NYPD officers have skyrocketed.
Attacks on uniformed police officers are up an alarming 63% over the past six years.
So far in 2025 alone, nearly 1,000 uniformed officers have been attacked.
This is up dramatically from 2019 levels.
Most of the violent assaults involve repeat offenders and illegal aliens released under former President Joe Biden’s open-border policies.
They have left officers bloodied, injured, and even hospitalized.
One notorious case involved a Venezuelan national released into the U.S. by the Biden administration.
He was later convicted of attacking NYPD officers in Times Square.
Other incidents include an off-duty cop beaten and robbed in the Bronx and a gang brawl involving suspected members of the Venezuelan Tren de Aragua criminal network.
Retired officers and law enforcement experts are pointing fingers at progressive district attorneys like Manhattan’s George Soros-funded Alvin Bragg.
Police said Bragg and other “woke” DAs refuse to prosecute felony assaults on cops.
Retired NYPD sergeant and adjunct professor at Penn State University-Lehigh Valley, Joseph Giacalone, told the New York Post he believes the current criminal justice system is behind the rise in this particular type of violence.
“You have DAs like Alvin Bragg who don’t even want to prosecute felony assaults against cops,” Giacalone said.
“So where’s the deterrence?
“You have a criminal justice system that’s a revolving door, and people are getting arrested 40, 50, 60 times,” he said.
“The cops are dealing with people out on the streets who are really bad.”
He added he also thinks people have lost respect for New York’s finest.
Another retired officer said it was possible that more officers are being targeted due to their training.
“It’s always de-escalate and never take control, which often emboldens [a] perp and gives them an advantage,” the former police officer told the Post.
Critics say the NYPD is also hamstrung by politically correct “de-escalation” training that encourages passivity and puts officers at greater risk.
President Donald Trump, who recently marked National Police Week with a vow to restore law and order, condemned the Biden administration’s approach to public safety.
“A nation in chaos ceases to be a citadel of liberty,” Trump warned.
“Their reckless, soft-on-crime policies emboldened criminals and thugs… and jeopardized public trust.”
Trump has vowed to fully fund law enforcement, reinstate tough sentencing, and put criminals behind bars where they belong.
However, Trump’s efforts counter the agenda of Democrats who continue to side with offenders over officers.
