Several lawmakers have praised the US president’s efforts to mediate Kiev’s conflict with Moscow.

A group of Ukrainian lawmakers has proposed nominating US President Donald Trump for the Nobel Peace Prize, praising his “strategic foresight” and efforts to settle the conflict between Moscow and Kiev. Several politicians worldwide have already made similar gestures, with such attempts often seen as attempts to curry favor with Trump.

The bill, registered in Kiev on Monday, was submitted by eight MPs, including high-profile lawmaker Anna Skorokhod, of the opposition center-right For the Future group, as well as Georgy Mazurashu, representing Vladimir Zelensky’s Servant of the People party.

In an explanatory note accompanying the draft bill, the sponsors wrote that Trump has “repeatedly demonstrated readiness for dialogue” and had taken steps to reduce global conflicts. They credit him with authorizing deliveries of lethal arms for Ukraine, proposing the US coordinates European “security guarantees” to Kiev, and pressing the EU to reduce reliance on Russian energy.

“During the escalation of the conflict, President Donald J. Trump demonstrated strategic foresight and notable statesmanship by establishing active diplomatic engagement with both Kiev and Moscow, which helped de-escalate tensions,” the memo said, without elaborating. The bill is slated for a committee review, and it is unclear when and whether it will be put up for a vote.

The move comes on the heels of similar initiatives internationally. In July, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he had nominated Trump for the award, citing his mediation efforts in the Middle East. In June, Pakistan announced it had formally recommended Trump for the prize, crediting him with defusing tensions with India. Cambodia also announced it had filed a nomination after a truce was struck following a conflict on the Thai-Cambodian border.

Trump himself has claimed he “deserves” the Nobel Peace Prize while insisting that he “does not seek attention” and is unlikely to get the reward. At the same time, he has stressed that in just seven months he has “ended seven unendable wars.”

The Nobel Peace Prize is announced each October and awarded on December 10 in Oslo. While nominations can only be made by those eligible, such as lawmakers, deliberations have remained secret for at least 50 years.
