Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi said on Saturday, July 12th, that Tehran was “ready” for diplomacy on its nuclear programme, weeks after Israel and the United States struck its facilities.
“The Islamic Republic of Iran remains ready to build this confidence through diplomacy but, before that, our counterparts must convince us that they want diplomacy and not that diplomacy is a cover for other goals and objectives they have,” Araghchi said in the Iranian capital.
Araghchi also said Iran’s cooperation with the International Atomic Energy Agency “will take on a new form”, following a law suspending ties with UN watchdog.
“Our cooperation with the agency has not stopped, but will take on a new form,” said Araghchi, adding that requests to monitor nuclear sites “will be reviewed on a case-by-case basis. .. taking into account safety and security issues.”
In a written interview with Le Monde on July 11, responding to proposals by the UK, France and Germany to trigger the sanctions mechanism under the 2015 nuclear deal, Araghchi warned this would be “tantamount to a military attack and would essentially negate Europe’s role in discussions concerning Iran’s peaceful nuclear program.”
