A 27-year-old Ohio man landed in custody Sunday after he allegedly attempted to enroll as a student at Norwich High School in upstate New York using a fake identity, according to a local report.

Norwich Police arrested Caleb Jireh Alexander of Columbus, Ohio, on Sept. 15 for criminal impersonation. The arrest followed an investigation that began at the Norwich YMCA, where Alexander allegedly used foul language and spoke disrespectfully to staff while carrying multiple identification cards containing false information, WBNG reported.

Alexander then went to Norwich High School, where he allegedly provided school officials with a fake name, date of birth and address while attempting to register as a student and gain access to the building, the outlet reported. School staff recognized something was wrong and contacted authorities.

Officers tracked down and arrested Alexander after receiving his description. During their investigation, detectives discovered Alexander had an outstanding warrant from Ohio on charges including robbery and impersonating a police officer, according to the outlet. Ohio authorities confirmed they will seek his extradition.

“Although Mr. Alexander’s true intentions are not yet fully known, Norwich City School staff did an exceptional job recognizing that something wasn’t right. Our detectives quickly tracked down leads, and our patrol units did an excellent job locating the suspect after being briefed on Mr. Alexander’s description,” said Deputy Chief Scott Burlison, according to WBNG.

Burlison added that investigators found no evidence any children were harmed during the alleged incident.

Alexander remains in custody while awaiting an extradition hearing, the outlet reported. Police appear to not have determined the suspect’s motives.
