Poland votes: Conservative Nawrocki swept majori…

Karol Nawrocki has been elected president of Poland, taking 50.89 percent of the vote, versus Rafal Trzaskowski’s 49.11 percent.

Those who supported President Andrzej Duda in the 2020 elections voted overwhelmingly for Karol Nawrocki this time. He received 93.6 percent of the votes of Duda’s voters from 5 years ago, while the remaining 6.4 percent voted for Rafał Trzaskowski.

Duda posted on X for Poland to “stay strong.”

The incoming American ambassador to Poland offered up congratulations to Nawrocki on X.

“Congratulations to Poland – proving yet again throughout the ups and downs of a hard fought campaign between two great patriots exactly what a strong, proud and free people and nation they are!! if Poland wins the world wins!!” Tom Rose wrote on X.

Nawrocki was more popular in the U.S., while Trzaskowski was more popular in Russia and Belarus, albeit very few voted in these latter two countries. 

The PiS-backed candidate received 56.6 percent of the votes of Poles residing in the United States, slightly better than that obtained by Andrzej Duda five years ago (54.49 percent). KO-backed Trzaskowski 43.35 percent, according to the results published on the website of the National Electoral Commission. A record number of 49,000 people voted.

In Russia, Trzaskowski received 81 votes (63.78 percent), and Nawrocki got 46 (36.22 percent).

In Belarus, Trzaskowski received 57 votes (52.78 percent), and Nawrocki received 51 votes (47.22 percent).

Defense is expected to be a key aspect of Nawrocki’s term, as Poland has been a supporter of Ukraine against Putin’s aggression and is vocal about NATO members spending at least 3 percent of their GDP on defense. Last year, Poland spent over 4 percent. 

However, Nawrocki has expressed his opposition to Ukraine joining NATO.

Outgoing President Duda is today together with the leaders of the B9 and Nordic countries. He will take part in a summit in Vilnius on Monday to discuss strengthening the defense of the eastern flank and prepare for the upcoming summit at the end of June in The Hague, according to presidential minister Wojciech Kolarski.

The meeting will be attended by leaders from the Baltic countries, (Lithuania, Latvia and Estonia), the Nordic countries (Sweden, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Iceland), and the Bucharest Nine along NATO’s eastern flank, (Baltic countries, Poland, Czech Republic, Slovakia, Hungary, Romania and Bulgaria).

NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky will also be at the summit.
