The Office of the Secretary of War has escalated its review of “Seditious Six” Democrat Sen. Mark Kelly (D-AZ) into a full command investigation, according to reports.
The official probe is intensifying scrutiny over the Democrat senator after he appeared in a video urging service members to “refuse illegal orders.”
According to a Pentagon official cited by Punchbowl News, what began as a preliminary review has now expanded into a coordinated probe between the Department of War and the Office of the General Counsel.
The War Department official confirmed the escalation in a statement on Monday evening.
A department spokesperson stated:
“Retired Captain Kelly is currently under investigation for serious allegations of misconduct.
“Further official comments will be limited to preserve the integrity of the proceedings.”
The move marks one of the most aggressive steps yet in the administration’s effort to clamp down on political messaging aimed at active-duty personnel, particularly messaging viewed as undermining the chain of command.
Officials previously announced a formal review into Kelly’s conduct following the release of the video that triggered widespread backlash within the military community.
Kelly Fires Back, Claims Retaliation
On Monday, Kelly responded with a combative statement accusing President Donald Trump and Secretary of War Pete Hegseth of abusing their authority by investigating allegations of sedition.
“It should send a shiver down the spine of every patriotic American that the president and secretary of defense would abuse their power to come after me or anyone this way,” he said.
Kelly asserted that the investigation is politically motivated and tied his criticism to earlier public disputes.
“It wasn’t enough for Donald Trump to say I should be hanged,” he continued.
“It wasn’t enough for Pete Hegseth to threaten me with a court-martial.
“Now they are threatening everything I fought and served for across twenty-five years in the U.S. Navy—all because I repeated something every service member is taught.”
The Arizona Democrat said he will continue to serve despite the investigation.
“I will keep doing my job representing Arizona,” he said.
“If Trump and Hegseth think this will stop me from doing what I’ve done every day of my adult life—fighting for this country—then they’ve got the wrong guy.
“Tomorrow, and the next day, I will keep doing my job representing Arizona.”
