Independent journalist Nick Shirley says he has become a political target after his viral reporting on Somali-led large-scale fraud in Minnesota’s childcare system.

Shirley is arguing that instead of rallying behind accountability, critics on the Left are attacking him for bringing the issue to light.

The threats were revealed by Shirley in a preview segment of his interview on the debut episode of OutKick’s upcoming podcast, “The Riley Gaines Show.”

Speaking to host and conservative women’s rights advocate Riley Gaines, Shirley said:

“I think something like this would just be ‘fraud as bad.’

“But no, now people are coming after me for exposing fraud.

“And who are all those people? They’re leftists.”

Shirley told host Riley Gaines that, rather than uniting to condemn abuses of taxpayer funds, his critics have focused their efforts on discrediting him.

“And it’s just a moment where they could have really been like, ‘Okay, you guys, let’s come together. Let’s tell everyone Fraud is bad. Let’s crack down on the fraud.’

“Instead, they come after the person who is exposing the fraud,” he said.

Since his reporting went viral, Shirley said he has received a flood of new leads alleging similar misconduct in other states.

The allegations have almost exclusively involved Somali-run daycare centers and publicly funded service providers.

“The people have given me a mandate to expose more of the fraud, so I’ll be exposing more,” Shirley added.

Viral Exposé

Shirley’s explosive 42-minute investigative video, published last month, documented visits to Minnesota daycare centers that appeared largely inactive despite receiving millions of dollars in taxpayer funding.

The footage has been viewed more than 138 million times on X and triggered federal reviews.

The scandal has led the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services to freeze all childcare payments to the state.

In the weeks since, legacy media outlets including CBS News and CNN have attempted to cast doubt on Shirley’s reporting.

However, it is scrutiny that he says underscores exactly why independent journalists are stepping in where institutional watchdogs and the corporate media have failed.
