French baker hailed as hero after disarming rifl…

The man who entered a bakery in Uzès armed with a .22 long rifle and was disarmed by the owner has now been arrested, nearly four weeks after the incident.

Police from the Bagnols-sur-Cèze department apprehended the suspect on June 4. He is currently in pre-trial detention and is expected to appear in court in Nîmes on June 11.

The attack took place on May 10, when the man first entered the Moutas bakery in the early morning and began harassing a young woman. Cyril Cosmo, the bakery’s owner, stepped in and forced the man to leave. A few hours later, the suspect returned — this time with a rifle.

Despite the danger, Cosmo managed to disarm the attacker, who then fled. The act was caught on surveillance footage and widely shared online, earning Cosmo praise across France.

Authorities confirmed the man was already known to the courts and now faces charges including armed violence and the illegal possession and transport of a category C weapon.

Cosmo, who has lived in Uzès since 2017, later thanked the national gendarmerie for their work, writing on his bakery’s Facebook page that they had “done their job brilliantly.” He also expressed deep gratitude to those who offered support, both in person and from afar.
