Colombia withdraws from South Africa’s case against Israel

Colombia has withdrawn its declaration of intervention in the case brought by the Republic of South Africa against Israel concerning the application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip. The International Court of Justice in The Hague reported this.

Withdrawal of the declaration

As Colombia Reports reports, the Colombian government decided to withdraw the declaration submitted on April 5, 2024. This document defined the country’s participation in proceedings titled “Application of the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in the Gaza Strip.”

The International Court of Justice announced the Colombian government’s decision on Tuesday. The court’s statement said that Colombia had withdrawn its previously submitted declaration of intervention.

According to the outlet, the decision by the administration of President Abelardo de la Espriella is part of a broader effort to restore Colombia’s relations with Israel and the United States. The new president, who took office in August, restored diplomatic relations with Israel and lifted the ban on coal exports to that country.

According to Colombia Reports, the previous president, Gustavo Petro, played a leading role in diplomatic efforts aimed at isolating Israel and appealing to the International Court of Justice.
