Assaults against U.S. immigration officers have surged nearly 700% this year, according to the Department of Homeland Security.
The attacks come as President Donald Trump’s sweeping deportation agenda kicks into high gear and left-wing “sanctuary” policies come under fire.
From January 21 to June 30, DHS recorded 79 assault events against ICE and federal immigration agents.
This marks a stunning increase compared to just 10 during the same time period last year, equating to a 690% spike.
Officials say the actual number is likely even higher, as the department is processing reports at breakneck speed amid nationwide operations.
“Dangerous rhetoric by sanctuary politicians has fanned the flames of violence against federal law enforcement,” DHS Assistant Secretary Tricia McLaughlin said.
Among the most alarming incidents: a Molotov cocktail attack targeting ICE and CBP agents at a hotel near Los Angeles International Airport.
The alleged perpetrator, Eric Anthony Rodriguez, is described by DHS as a “serial criminal” with a long rap sheet including assault with a deadly weapon, robbery, check fraud, and vandalism.
Rodriguez reportedly launched the incendiary device on June 21 at a location where 15 ICE agents and 12 CBP officers were staying. Fortunately, the attack failed, and no injuries were reported.
Rodriguez also had an outstanding felony warrant for parole violations.
In Nebraska, agents arrested Gabriel Hurtado-Cariaco, a 30-year-old illegal alien from Venezuela and suspected member of the violent Tren de Aragua gang, after he allegedly attempted to murder a federal officer during a traffic stop.
According to DHS, Hurtado-Cariaco violently attacked a Homeland Security Investigations (HSI) agent, launching him into the air, then placed him in a chokehold until other agents pulled him off.
Another case in Minnesota involved Roberto Carlos Munoz-Guatemala, an illegal alien and convicted child sex offender.
DHS says Munoz-Guatemala dragged an ICE officer 50 yards with his vehicle during a botched arrest attempt in Bloomington.
“This illegal alien has been committing violent crimes in the U.S. for nearly 15 years,” McLaughlin said, slamming Democrat Gov. Tim Walz.
“Instead of comparing ICE law enforcement to the Gestapo, Gov. Walz should be thanking our brave law enforcement for arresting these violent criminals.”
President Trump, en route Tuesday to his newly built “Alligator Alcatraz” detention facility in the Florida Everglades, made it clear that his administration isn’t backing down.
“This is not a nice business,” Trump told reporters before departing the White House, referring to the deportation effort.
The massive new facility is located 50 miles west of Miami.
It was assembled on a former airstrip and can house 5,000 detainees.
Surrounded by miles of swampland, it has become a symbol of the Trump administration’s zero-tolerance approach to illegal immigration.
Meanwhile, Trump’s “big, beautiful bill,” a $3.3 trillion legislative package that includes major border and immigration enforcement funding, cleared its final hurdle in the Senate on Tuesday.
It now heads to the House of Representatives, where Republicans are pushing for passage ahead of the July 4 deadline Trump set for signing it into law.
The bill includes:
- $350 billion for border and national security
- $46 billion to expand the southern border wall
- $45 billion for 100,000 new migrant detention beds
- $10 billion in grants to states that assist in deportation operations
- 10,000 new ICE officers, each offered a $10,000 signing bonus
- A massive scale-up of Border Patrol agents
The plan would empower the administration to deport up to 1 million people per year, fulfilling Trump’s promise of executing the largest mass deportation operation in U.S. history.
Despite the spike in attacks on ICE and federal immigration agents, top Democrats have remained largely silent.
No major Democrat has condemned the assault surge or disavowed the dangerous rhetoric comparing law enforcement to “Nazis.”
Yet, DHS says this rhetoric is putting lives in danger.
With violent offenders, gang members, and repeat illegal alien criminals increasingly turning violent, Republican leaders say the rise in attacks only strengthens the case for fully funding and supporting the Trump administration’s enforcement strategy.
The White House is expected to unveil additional enforcement directives in the coming weeks as part of its immigration crackdown.
