Democrat Sen. Chris Murphy (D-CT) has dismissed concerns about mass illegal immigration as a “fake problem” and argued that Americans seeking safer communities would be better off living in areas with fewer U.S.-born citizens.
During an interview with The CT Mirror, Murphy rejected the Trump administration’s framing of illegal immigration and downplayed an issue that helped propel President Donald Trump back to the White House.
“The problem, according to the Trump administration, is a country that has been invaded, a country that is at risk physically because of the presence of people from other countries,” Murphy said.
“That is a fake problem.
“That is not a real problem.”
The Connecticut Democrat went on to claim that both first-generation and illegal aliens commit crimes at lower rates than native-born Americans.
“Nobody likes to hear this, but immigrants, first-generation immigrants, and undocumented immigrants both commit crimes at rates lower than natural-born Americans, than people that are born here in this country,” Murphy said.
“So, if you want to live in a safe community, you are actually better off living in a community with people that just got to the United States of America.”
The Democrat senator did not provide any evidence to support the claims.

Murphy Previously Lived in Predominantly White Communities
Murphy’s comments come despite his own history of living in Connecticut communities with relatively low levels of racial diversity.
The senator moved to Hartford in 2020 after facing criticism for spending more than a year without owning a residence in Connecticut, according to The Hartford Courant.
Murphy and his wife, Cathy Holahan, purchased a 3,392-square-foot, three-bedroom home in Hartford after selling their previous home in Cheshire.
Hartford is a majority-minority city and considerably more racially diverse than Cheshire, where approximately 80% of residents are white.
During the period when Murphy did not own a Connecticut home, he and his family reportedly divided their time between Washington, D.C., and his parents’ summer home in Old Lyme.
The historic coastal town in southeastern Connecticut is even less racially diverse, with white residents accounting for approximately 88% of its population.
Trump Administration Targets Criminal Illegal Immigrants
Murphy’s dismissal of concerns surrounding illegal immigration comes as the Trump administration continues deporting illegal immigrants with serious criminal records.
The first deportation flight to Haiti since the administration terminated protections for Haitian illegal immigrants departed on August 20 carrying gang members, child sex predators, and other violent criminals.
The Department of Homeland Security said 162 Haitian illegal aliens were removed on the flight and released photographs and criminal records for 15 of the deportees.
The removals followed a Supreme Court decision in June that cleared the way for Trump to terminate longstanding Temporary Protected Status for roughly 350,000 Haitians.
In a statement, Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin said:
“On the latest deportation flight back to Haiti, we deported dangerous criminals including pedophiles, gang members, drug traffickers, and violent assailants.
“TPS was never designed to be permanent, yet previous administrations have used it as a de facto amnesty program for decades.
“Under the strong leadership of President Donald J. Trump, we are putting America first again.”
Murphy Says Immigration Makes Communities Safer
Illegal immigration became a defining political issue during Trump’s successful campaign to return to the White House.
The president promised mass deportations and tougher enforcement of federal immigration law.
Murphy, however, dismissed the underlying concern as something that is “not a real problem.”
Rather than viewing large numbers of illegal aliens as a public-safety threat, the Connecticut Democrat argued that their presence makes communities safer.
“If you want to live in a safe community,” Murphy said, Americans are “actually better off” living among people who recently arrived in the country.
