The UK’s House of Lords has backed sweeping changes to abortion law in England and Wales, rejecting a key amendment and clearing the way for the decriminalization of abortion for women up to and during birth.
So basically, the UK makes a statement that they have ABSOLUTELY NO MORALS LEFT!
The move follows approval in the House of Commons last summer and marks a significant shift in legal accountability, as women will no longer face prosecution for carrying out abortions themselves at any stage of pregnancy.
Lords Reject Conservative Amendment to Block Measure
Peers voted 185 to 148 to defeat an amendment introduced by Baroness Sheila Lawlor that sought to remove provisions allowing women to perform abortions up to and during birth.
Under the legislation, the existing 24-week limit remains in place for doctors and healthcare professionals, who can still face criminal charges for performing abortions beyond that point.
However, the law creates a distinction for pregnant women, who will not be prosecuted if they carry out abortions themselves after 24 weeks, including through the use of abortion pills.
The change effectively removes criminal liability for women while maintaining restrictions on medical providers.
Pro-Life Groups Warn of Risks and Late-Term Abortions
Pro-life advocates have raised concerns that the change could lead to an increase in late-term abortions, including procedures carried out outside clinical settings.
Right to Life UK warned that the legislation would significantly alter the legal landscape.
“If the Crime and Policing Bill receives Royal Assent, it will no longer be illegal for women to perform their own abortions, for any reason, including sex-selective purposes, and at any point up to and during birth,” the group said.
The organization also warned about potential safety risks.
“This change to the law would likely lead to a significant increase in the number of women performing late-term abortions at home, endangering the lives of many more women,” the group added.
Right to Life UK pointed to international data to support its concerns.
“The country saw a 43% increase in late-term abortions” after abortion was decriminalized in New Zealand in 2020, the group stated.
Public Opinion and Policy Clash
The group further argued that the policy shift is out of step with public opinion, citing polling data on abortion limits and restrictions.
“As you may be aware, polling shows that 89% of the general population and 91% of women agree that gender-selective abortion should be explicitly banned by the law – and only 1% of women support introducing abortion up to birth,” Right to Life UK said.
“The same polling shows that 60% of the general population and 70% of women want to see our abortion time limit lowered to 20 weeks or below,” the group added.
The legislation now moves closer to becoming law, with critics warning it could reshape abortion policy in England and Wales while intensifying debate over legal limits and protections.
