Virginia state Sen. L. Louise Lucas (D-VA) was charged Thursday in a federal indictment accusing her of helping lead a marijuana trafficking and money laundering operation that authorities say used her political power to shield itself from scrutiny.
Lucas, 82, surrendered after the indictment was unsealed, according to a Justice Department spokesperson.
Six other defendants, including several of her relatives, were also charged.
Lucas is now reportedly in federal custody.

Prosecutors allege the longtime Democratic Party power broker participated in a criminal enterprise that acquired and distributed large quantities of marijuana and laundered the proceeds.
In one alleged wiretapped conversation, Lucas described the operation as “our last chance at generational wealth.”
“I’ve got too old to not be greedy,” Lucas allegedly said.
FBI Says Lucas Used Legislative Power to Protect Enterprise
FBI Director Kash Patel accused Lucas and her associates of using her position atop one of Virginia’s most powerful legislative committees to advance their financial interests.
The charges allege “Lucas and a close-knit group of family members and associates orchestrated a multi-year scheme to enrich their own criminal marijuana enterprise, ‘the Lucas Enterprise’ — using Lucas’ position as Chairwoman of the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee to insulate the enterprise from criminal scrutiny and influencing legislation to financially benefit themselves,” Patel said in a statement.

🚨 JUST IN: FBI Director Kash Patel reveals now-indicted President Pro Tempore of the Virginia Senate L. Louise Lucas (D) not only obtained MILLIONS OF DOLLARS through an illegal marijuana operation, but used her Senatorial position to PROTECT IT FRAUD, CHEATING AND STEALING. "Truly, the epitome of hypocrisy for a public official. Ms. Lucas posted on social media, ‘I’m a 78-year-old grandma who legalized pot and now has her own cannabis store, and I’m the last thing standing between the GOP and total control of Virginia. That’s worth an RT,’ end quote." "While she was posting these things, and the reason I highlighted it, is because during this time period, her and her co-conspirators continued her criminal conspiracy to enrich themselves and break the public trust!" @FBIDirectorKash She bragged about her cannabis store online while the feds say the illegal side of it was making her rich! Then made it about Republicans! Now she’s RIGHTFULLY facing FEDERAL charges. Total nuke in Virginia politics. One of the most powerful and influential Dem senators has been exposed for the fraud she is.

Lucas has served in the Virginia Senate since 1992 and is its president pro tempore, presiding when the lieutenant governor is absent.
Her chairmanship of the Senate Finance and Appropriations Committee gives her substantial influence over legislation with a budget impact.
She has used that authority to block bills she opposes.
The indictment follows FBI searches in May of Lucas’ hometown office and a cannabis shop in which she holds a stake.
At the time, Lucas, a vocal critic of President Donald Trump’s administration, portrayed the searches as an attempt to intimidate her.
Lucas Calls Prosecution a “Circus” Through Legal Team
Lucas’ legal team dismissed Thursday’s developments without addressing the specific allegations.
In a statement, Brian Woolfolk, chief counsel for the L. Louise Lucas Legal Defense Fund, said:
“This is the circus we always expected it to be, and we will wait for further details to have a more specific response.”
A statement attributed to Lucas on her social media account similarly focused on the federal government bringing its “full weight” against her.
The statement attempted to frame Lucas as a great-grandmother who is being targeted by the Trump administration.
“I will not be intimidated,” Lucas said in the statement.
“I will not be bullied.
“And I will not back down.”
Lucas has also been a leading advocate of Virginia Democrats’ unsuccessful effort to redraw the state’s congressional map ahead of the midterms.
The criminal charges remain allegations.
Federal investigators, however, say the case concerns a coordinated effort to turn public authority into private profit.
“No one is above the law,” Patel declared.
“This FBI will continue to follow the facts with our Justice Department and ensure those responsible for criminal conduct are held accountable.”
