The Oakland County Board of Commissioners voted 11-6 on Thursday to approve a no-bid contract giving up to $1.5 million in taxpayer money to Planned Parenthood, the nation’s largest abortion company.

Despite killing 434,450 babies in abortions last year, the approved funding will support Planned Parenthood’s Ferndale abortion clinic through at least August 2028.

The decision came despite fierce bipartisan opposition and extensive public comment against the resolution. It follows the recent closure of Planned Parenthood clinics in Livonia and Warren.

Right to Life of Michigan strongly denounced the vote in comments to LifeNews.

“Today’s vote represents a complete failure of local government to hold itself accountable to the taxpayers,” said Amber Roseboom, president of Right to Life of Michigan. “Planned Parenthood’s unrelenting push for more taxpayer money, in the midst of a hotly contested election in which they are funneling millions of dollars to Democratic candidates, is a flagrant abuse of the public trust and resources. Democrats at every level of government have forgotten they are accountable to the voters, not their special interest super PACs.”

Commission Chairman Dave Woodward, a Democrat, advanced the proposal after Planned Parenthood cited losses from federal funding cuts. Critics countered that legit medical services are already available through major health systems across Michigan and that the county is forcing taxpayers to subsidize the leading abortion business in America while the organization spends heavily to influence elections.

Similar local taxpayer support was recently approved in Washtenaw County, which allocated $500,000 to Planned Parenthood.

Pro-life advocates say these decisions prioritize a political special interest over the clear opposition of many taxpayers who do not want public funds used to sustain the abortion industry.
